Two years ago, our very own shaa'ir, Irfan 'Abid' saahib had posted
a rather touching nazm celebrating Mother's Day. The poem was very
aptly titled "maaN" and I, personally, really liked it. A Google
search for "Mother's Day" "Irfan 'Abid'" ought to yield favorable
results, and you can then contact Irfan sb. to obtain the necessary
permissions to recite his nazm.

Shukriya UVR Saheb... I found it, and I am reproducing it here for the
benefit of those who may want to read it again. Any other suggestions will
also be most welcome. - Khursheed

Thanks are due to all THREE of you, for this lovely
poem : Irfan Saheb, UVR Saheb and KHursheed Saheb.

To have a special day dedicated to the Mother or
Father may have become a tradition over here
(mainly for commercial purposes ?). But, in the
psyche of people from the sub-continent, every day
is Mother's Day --- and Father's Day --- in fact
Family Day.

This nazm by Irfan sahib has been my personal favourite since I read
it two years ago. I came on ALUP after a while today and I got to
read it once again! Thanks to this thread by Khursheed sahib.

I don't think anybody can praise this nazm enough to do justice to
it.. it's just beautiful!

Khursheed saaheb,

A few years back, I came across a very moving poem by Nida Fazli,
which coincidentally has the same title as Irfan saaheb's excellent
nazm already suggested by UVR saaheb ("maa.N"). This Nida Fazli
poem has the structure of a ghazal, and might technically be a
musalsal ghazal, but somehow (perhaps because of the subject being
so unconventional for a traditional ghazal), I always think of
it as a nazm. My books are all packed-up in preparation for a move,
so I had no recourse but to copy-paste it from Nita-ji's website
(urdupoetry dot com). I have made a couple of transliteration
corrections in the version quoted below. I hope you (and other
ALUPers) find it appropriate to read on Mother's Day. I do.

Khursheed Sahib,

As most of you know, Mother's Day is one of my favorite days of the
year, and lately it has become even more important for me at a
personal level. Out of all the roles that I have played in my life,
the role of mother is definitely the most rewarding, a mother's love
is so unconditional and pure!

Well, the two poems that I was going to quote have already been
quoted. I would just like to add that Nida Fazli's poem 'maaN' has
been sung by Pankaj Udhaas. I am not much of a Pankaj Udhaas fan, but
the contents definitely make this one worth listening.

piChhle dinoN Mona Shahaab kii kitaab 'sadaa jab lauT ke aaii' kii
ruu_numaaii ke silsile meiN huii ek mehfil meiN shariik hone kaa mauqa
milaa thaa. vahaaN unhoN_ne apnaa ek sher pa.Dhaa thaa, jo mere zehn
meiN reh gayaa, kuChh yuuN hai:

duniyaa ne aaj kii hai jo izzat ataa mujhe,
lagtaa hai lag gaii merii maaN kii dua mujhe!

aap sab dostoN ke liye bahut sii duaaoN aur muhabbat ke saath,

Zoya ji, in this context, a rendition ‘o maa.N tujhe salaam' is a good
one, and Jagjit does a superb job. It is a tribute to the unflinching
motherly love, no matter what the son may have done:

jo gir gayaa is jahaa.N kii nazar se
dekho use kabhii ik maa.N kii nazar se

...
pyaar hii pyaar hai, dard hii dard hai, mamtaa jis kaa naam
o maa.N tujhe salaam, o maa.N tujhe salaam

Yogesh Sahib,

I agree, Jagjit Singh has sung this song beautifully. Talking about
Mother's Day songs, I have always loved this one:

us_ko nahiiN dekhaa ham_ne kabhii, par is_kii zaruurat kya hogii,
ai maaN terii suurat se alag Bhagwaan kii suurat kya hogii!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - they are most helpful and greatly
appreciated.

Zoya Saheba, I agree that the mother's role and unconditional love is a
one of the most beautiful and enviable thing. I owe so much to my late
mother, and I do feel that a lot of what I have achieved in life has been
due to her blessings and 'duaN'. I was told as a child that "maaN ke
peroN ke neechay jannat hoti hai", i.e. showing respect and serving your
mother earns you a place in paradise and I still believe it.

So, Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers, and may your children bring you
lots of happiness.
