Greatest living urdu poet

On the sad demise of Munir Niazi,I came through this line in a news
report.
"After Faiz, it was difficult to decide who was the greatest living
Urdu poet, Ahmad Faraz or Munir Niazi. Now only Faraz is left."
I know, it is sometimes difficult to compare poets and poetry, but I
find Amjad Islam Amjad better than Faraz.I would like to know what
other members think about this in particular and in general about the
thread topic.

wo log jo aage guzar gaye
kya sacha tha unka jhooT tha kya!
kis haq ki kHaatir laRhte the!
kis zulm ke haathoN marte the
kya kHwaab the unki aankhoN ke

jo seel-e-zamaaN ka rizq huiN

arzhang jo leer-o-leer hua
kya kya uss meN tasveereN thiN?
aur paani par jo likhiN gayiN

ik dasht ki jalti miTTi par
kya bahte lahoo ne likha tha!
pardes ke qaatil rastoN meN
kya marte huoN ne socha tha!
jo ahle-chashm ki saf meN gaye
mahloN meN takHt nasheen hue
muflis ke lahoo ke chhenToN se
wo daaman jo rangeen hue
aur kHalq-e-kHuda ke qismat ke
jo maalik ban kar baiTh gaye

phir uss pe tan ke baiTh gaye

au wo jo ilm ke joya the
taaroN pe kamande Daalte the
jo apni soch ke gulshan meN

kuchh ghuTti, marti cheekHeN haiN
kuchh larze hue avaaze haiN
kuchh kHauf hai patthar ban ne ka

kuchh zakhm haiN jinke naam nahi

murgHoN ki tarah iss malbe meN
minqaar daba kar kya hoga
ye raunde hue se taaj o kalaah

wo nagHme ga kar kya hoga!
agloN ki jeet aur haar se ham
kyuN kHush haiN! kyuN sharmeenda haiN!
hai lauh-e-jahaaN pe darj yahi
ham apna aap aayinda haiN
bas aik haqeeqat yaad rahe
jis saans talak ham zinda haiN
aao ke chune iss malbe se
jo kHwaab abhi tabeenda haiN
un jazboN ki tauqeer kareN
jo anmiT haiN, paayinda haiN
bas un taaroN ki baat kareN
jo bujh kar bhi rakhshinda haiN

is gard ke manzarnaame meN
jo apne kahe se ruk jaaye
aisa to koi mausam bhi nahi
ye sach hai aankh jhaptke tak
manzar bhi nahi aur ham bhi nahi
ai baad-e-fana se Darte dil
jo dekh sake to kam bhi nahi!
ye nazaare ki fursat bhi!
kuchh kar sakne ki taaqat bhi!
ye pal do pal ki muhlat bhi!

kisii kii aaNkh jo pur-nam nahiiN hai
nah samjho yih kih us ko Gham nahiiN hai

savaad-i-dard meN tanhaa khaRaa huuN
palaT jaauuN magar mausam nahiiN hai

will this be correct spelling?

'DhuNNd'. the 'N' sound kind of resonates when enunciating this
mysterious word.

of current era. He excelled in the writing of both ghazals and nazms.

I have been thinking about the question that you have raised for the
last few weeks. Amjad Islam Amjad Sahib is a close personal friend of
mine, and during a phone conversation with him a few days ago, I
discussed this matter with him also.

Without being modest, Amjad Islam Sahib is of the view that Ahmad Faraz
Sahib is indeed the greatest living Urdu poet right new. Having read
both Amjad Islam Sahib and Ahmad Faraz Sahib extensively, I tend to
agree with this opinion. I am talking strictly about poetry here. As a
person, Amjad Islam Sahib is one of the finest gentlemen I have ever
known.

In some literary circles, Zafar Iqbal Sahib is considered the greatest
living ghazal writer, but he has written almost no nazms and is not
nearly as popular with the masses as Faraz Sahib or Amjad Islam Sahib.

I wish other learned friends like Zaf Sahib and Amjad Nabeel Sahib
would contribute to this thread.

Thanks for your input. I wouldnt take Amjad Sahibs word on it, because
there is a conflict of inerest :-), but I take your word, because I
have not extensively read both of these poets.My impression, for
whatever its worth, is that Amjad is more versatile than Faraz. I would
be grateful if you could post any nazm of a similar mood by Faraz like
the one I posted by Amjad.
And my main purpose is to know both these poets more closely, not to
decide the "winner", but sometimes discussions like these are fun.

I came to Amjad Islaam Amjad late and have only read him sparingly, but
he leaves me in no doubt that he is one of the best. I am vastly more
familiar with Faraaz and based on this more comprehensive knowledge of
his work, I will pick him as my 'most favorite living poet' by a small
margin.. As to the 'greatest living poet' I will leave that to the more
knowledgeable than I.
